Tea time
The corrugated cottage was originally used as my office and sculptor’s studio. When I was repairing the floor in what is now the bedroom, I found some newspapers under there as insulation. I was surprised to find they were dated June, 1940! Curious, I spoke to a friend; the local historian, who mentioned the possibility that land girls were billeted in the cottage (probably temporary/prefab) during the war.
I previously worked in the conservation of old buildings and had just finished restoring a medieval house in France in a small town called Bellac, see http://www.bellac.co.uk, which has some unusual features. I was looking for something new to do, so was eager to start this new project! I wanted to do something more original than just a holiday let, so I decided to recreate the cottage like an art installation in the style of the times.
The house includes an Anderson shelter in the garden. The Anderson shelter was a bomb shelter named after Sir John Anderson and used during the Second World War. Safe from the threat of the Nazi Luftwaffe, children can now make it their den!

2 single beds downstairs and a loft up stairs very steep and small opening it attic room you can not stand upright.
Small fenced garden so children and dogs can be contained with lovely views facing south with mature trees on one side.
An Anderson shelter is in the garden so the children can stay and play.
Length of stay is flexible – guests can stay any length of time from 2 days to 4 weeks. If booking is through us a deposit of 25% will be required, with the whole sum being payable 6 weeks before the booking. If booking direct through us, guests wll be able to pay by bank transfer (wire)or cheque: contact us for details.
Returning guests (ie people who have stayed in one of our houses before) are eligible for a 10% reduction – please let us know when you make the booking.

Glastonbury Festival, the largest outdoor festival in the world is held near Pilton, a similar distance away. The festival is held most years in June.
Wells Cathedral, west front
Another nearby city is Wells with the magnificent Wells Cathedral. The Bishop’s Palace and gardens is also worth a visit. Look out for the swans in the moat ringing the bells for food!
Two world heritage sites, Stonehenge and the City of Bath (featuring the famous Roman Baths) are also within an hours drive.
There are several nearby country houses such as Montacute House, Lytes Cary and Longleat house. Near to Longleat house is also the safari park, Longleat.
By car
The cottage can be reached from the A303, the M4 and the M5.
There is off-road parking for up to two cars.
By train
The cottage is ten miles from Castle Cary station.
By plane
The nearest airport is Bristol Airport, about an hour away.
